Indian police on the trail of the spectacle-stealing monkey

Police are hot on the trail of a rogue spectacle-stealing monkey in India today.

In the Hindu holy city of Varanasi, officers were combing the alleyways to search for a monkey accused of stealing reading glasses from a South Korean tourist.

Kim Dang Hoon filed a formal complaint against the primate that he claims broke into his hotel room and pinched his spectacles, according to investigating officer Inspector Govind Singh.

Believe it or not, this monkey is actually called the Indian Spectacled Monkey. It is unclear if this is the type of monkey currently being hunted by police

"It is difficult to trace the monkey but I am trying my best to locate the rogue," a determined Singh said from Varanasi, some 300 kilometres (185 miles) southeast of Lucknow.

Problems with monkeys harassing tourists in the city were common, Singh said.

"But we can't do anything. We cannot shoot them or beat them as Hindus worship monkeys," he said.
