Campaigns: Human Rights for China
2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen protests. The truth about the harsh crackdown that followed has been hidden for too long.
On 3 - 4 June, 1989, hundreds of unarmed Chinese civilians calling for democracy were killed and countless others injured and detained by the Chinese authorities. Amnesty International's Secretary General Irene Khan has sent an open letter to Wu Bangguo, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China urging him to initiate an open and independent inquiry that will investigate the 1989 crackdown.
